  A fun approach to a poignant narrative about loving your own self and standing up to bullies… This sweetly adorable story, inspired by Childs’ own experience of being bullied in middle school, mixed with the real-life story and unique characteristics of Henri, Childs’ former French bulldog, is chock-full of heart, soul, and adventure. Henri, a little French Bulldog, is loving his new California life after moving from New York with his mom. Though anxious for his first day of doggy day care, Henri succeeds in making new friends and has a fun day. However, Henri’s habitual snorts soon make him the target of bullies. But what hurts the most is how his new friends refuse to take a stand for him. Will Henri realize he is lovable despite his snorts? Expressed poignantly through simple, rhyming verse, the narrative beautifully conveys the reassuring message that we are all lovable despite our differences. Henri is an endearingly winning protagonist with a distinctive, expressive personality. Children will savor Hannah Farr’s vivid, dynamic illustrations that beautifully bring Henri, with all his doggy-antics, to life. In this exceptionally well-structured and lovingly-penned tale, Childs sheds light on bullying in a way young readers will both understand and appreciate. Henri is lovable, and readers will cheer for him throughout this precious tale.


Childs’s book is simply a stunning work of children’s literature. I cannot say enough about the impact this book will have on young readers. The use of dogs, rhyming text, and an absolutely beautiful collection of touching illustrations make Childs and Farr’s book a future classic.

Henri and the Magnificent Snort, written by Samantha Childs and illustrated by Hannah Farr, is an invaluable book in bullying education. The lessons about self-confidence, self-worth, and acceptance combine to create a must-have story for elementary classrooms, homeschool programs, and school guidance counselors. I highly recommend Childs and Farr’s book to anyone looking for an easy-to-understand, rhyming storyline to help teach young readers how to value themselves and others.

I cried at the ending of this wonderful book! Being a grade schoolteacher since 1978, I have not read a more on target and moving story for children that also speaks to adults. A lot of us have been bullied or know someone who has been bullied, and the resolution in the story for Henri to overcome his shame and then help others was perfect writing. Hannah Farr’s illustrations are painted pictures, the pictures simple and direct, that match exactly with the story’s description. I love the illustrations of the Doggie Day Care bus, Henri on the SOAP box, the egg and the pig looking at the sunset, and most heartfelt was Henri looking in the mirror and seeing a pig because he was bullied about his adorable snort. Anyone who has ever had low esteem or ever bullied needs this book to remind them just how beautiful they are; a wonderful lesson taught by a simple story. Bravo! Samantha Childs you are a jewel: keep on writing.

Henri and The Magnificent Snort is beautiful and impactful, making it an amazing gift for children, and a perfect addition to a children’s library or book collection.  Helping children to understand and learn about bullying is more important today than it has ever been. This book tackles the important and complicated issue of bullying with compassion and empathy for the victim, bystanders, as well as for the bully.  By illustrating the traumatic impact of bullying through the experience of Henri, the lovable Frenchie, this book makes the topic accessible, and will help children (and their families) to have conversations about bullying that will help them to learn and make great choices for themselves and others. 


As someone who has worked with and for children throughout my career (most recently through Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC and through our work with Pink Shirt Day), I can say that this will be my personal go-to gift for all the kids in my life, and a recommendation for children’s reading lists.

Henri and the Magnificent Snort: A Children's Book about Bullying, Belonging, and Love by Samantha Childs is an adorable children’s book that is inspired by her faithful canine companion, Henri Le Frenchie. Henri is an extraordinary dog, but one of the most unusual things about him is his cute little snort. Henri loved his life in New York, but when he had to move to San Diego, he had to learn to adapt and cope with new challenges. His first two days of doggy daycare went very well, and he made some interesting new friends. However, shortly after this, another dog named Russell unkindly points out that his special snort makes him sound like a pig, and all the other dogs turn against him, including his new furry friends. Will Henri be able to overcome these bullies and learn to love himself again?

Samantha Childs’ heart-warming story reminds readers about the importance of self-acceptance and the value of differences. She draws attention to the harmful nature of bullying and how it can destroy even the highest spirits. Anyone who has experienced criticism has been a victim of bullying, or has felt badly about themself because of someone else, will find this book relatable. I found the writing endearing and the language very clear. The rhyming is also most appropriate, as it mirrors Henri’s playful personality. The illustrations by Hannah Farr are also charming and depict the dog’s life vividly. Bullying is a prevalent issue in society that particularly affects children. I think Henri and the Magnificent Snort is a brilliant read, with a powerful message.

When Henri the French bulldog entered Samantha Childs’ life, he was simply a wonderful companion — the  first dog she had that was all her own. But ultimately, the sweet little pup with adorable hair whorls on his backside and a distinctive snort brought Childs so much more than just the unconditional love that only a dog can offer.
